Ian Johnson

Head of Contracts & Procurement

I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing Supply and have spent my whole career in the field of Contracts & Procurement.

I have over 16 years experience in the Construction industry and have worked on a number of major projects (including the re-development of Manchester Piccadilly Station).

I moved onto the Birmingham Gateway project in July 2007 as I believe it provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to work on a landmark project which will transform Birmingham City Centre and leave a legacy for which the whole project team can feel justifiably proud. In addition, I was attracted by the vision of the Project Director who wants the Birmingham Gateway project “to be recognised worldwide as an exemplar model of best practice in both the way it is delivered and for its final form”.

Since moving onto the project the main emphasise has been on developing the outline Procurement Strategy, securing the project funding and progressing the award of the Lead Consultant and Delivery Partner contracts (both key members of the Integrated Project Team).

Following the recent funding announcement, the key focus will now turn to the establishment of the Integrated Project Team and the development of the optimum work package structure.

In delivering the project, one of the key challenges for the Contracts & Procurement Team will be to implement the Procurement Strategy in a way that provides best value, manages risk/inflation in an appropriate manner, is attractive to the market and ultimately ensures completion within budget. All this, of course, will need to be achieved whilst recognising the capacity issues which the Construction Industry is expected to face during the currency of the project!

Hopefully the above has ‘whetted your appetite’ and we look forward to hearing from you.
